obama. we didn't expect an aggressively dishonest debater to show up. that's what we got in mitt romney. what could the president have done differently? of course, we'll recalibrate and recalculate based on the mitt romney that showed up last night. we've got two more debates left. now we know what we're dealing with. we know that mitt romney will, in a split second, waulk away from the central policy of his entire economic plan because he knows it's bad politics. he has been campaigning on this $5 trillion tax cut since the beginning of the primaries. and last night he tried to walk away from it, because he knows he's going to have to tell the middle class that he's going to have to raise their taxes if he wants to pay for it. >> the $5 trillion cut, the president talked about that today. that was sort of the heart when you talk about him being honest, it comes down to the tax cuts. >> with well, there's plenty of other examples. >> let me play this one and get your reaction. >> when i got on to the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. but it cou

if the debate is the right place to do it. after the paul ryan speech, you have the obama campaign referring to the lies in paul ryan's speech and that's echoed by president obama's allies in the media. when you don't have the romney campaign's response robustly. for example, president obama has been running ads claiming that mitt romney's going to race taxes on the middle class. now, mitt romney has never made that claim. this is coming from a report making all kinds of arguments. and he's made all kinds of a assumptions that the romney campaign has rejected. also puts harvey rosen, you can also generate enough growth to avoid a middle class tax increase. there are a loft credible folks saying something else. it's a fact he's going to raise middle class tax. >> the obama campaign, david plouffe is a chris christie of the campaign saying their campaign is built on a tripod of lies and the president has said sometimes they just make things up. >> last i checked, isn't this called politics? you have lying all the time in politics. it is our responsibility to call folks out on it. on

is pretty good. while obama stepped out of debate camp in nevada to visit the hoover dam. that's neat too. with as many as 60 million americans expected to watch, both camps keep expectations low. it's a big game to say i'm going to do worse than you. romney senior adviser barbara comstock is in denver and jen psaki, press secretary for the obama campaign is in las vegas with the president. good to see both of you. nice big smiles. i love this optimism. we're all excited about tomorrow. barbara, let me start with you. there was something politico's chief political columnist wrote today that sort of made me smile and i wanted to get your reaction. roger simons wrote, there are three things mitt romney must do to win the presidential debate on wednesday. unfortunately, nobody knows what they are. do you know what they are? >> well, i think it's going to be talking to the american people about how the middle class has been buried under the higher taxes, the higher regulations and the -- just the job-killing policies for the past four years and how mitt romney can talk straight to th

, but it really seemed in the past few days since the debate, that mitt romney lit up to say it's working for barack obama, i'm going to make it work for me. >> would he seriously borrow a position from someone else? >> they want it because they need it. you don't get elected unless you appeal to moderates an the middle class. that's why the 47% comment hurt so much. that's why the poll numbers started breaking hard against him when it started really resonating through the heart land. he had a great debate. he's got an opportunity to do that. >> so, he should just clear that off the table. >> some of those problems are baked in his cake. >> jamal, jump in here. if you're a democrat in this country, not thrilled to see him suddenly approaching so hard in this area, but barack obama was kind of playing him a little bit, but seriously, i'm not sure if mitt romney may have said middle class more than obama. >> you know, what john just said is absolutely right. he had to get here. this is where american elections are fought, in the middle, the general election. what i don't understand

deal, romney is not going to try to bring it up in the debate. nor will president obama. the moment you do, have you opened the door for your opponent. >> you have to look in the mirror, it's an ugly picture. >> the responsibility is going to rest on the debate mod rater who is not going to do it. >> what people are saying is, can i get somebody to tell me the truth? i will say this here. you can parse words all you want to. there are some things called undeniable truth. no matter how you want to dance around it, there are some things that are very clear. some things are true, some things are false. >> there's also such a thing as throwing things against the wall and that is what the obama campaign has been effective at doing and the romney campaign hasn't been effective at doing that. >> the romney campaign, they have been -- i can show you the proof. go to our website. we have all the time. again, you have campaigns -- >> check up on after the fact. >> no, no. that's my point. you said earlier -- >> you want to call. >> you said don't fact check during the debate. i sid absolutely

watching. >> the great debate five days away. why romney has to win and why obama can't afford to lose. i'll talk to my political a-team. also, bibi and the bomb. >> a red line should be drawn right here. >> after dropping this on the u.n. yesterday, he talks to obama and romney today. what israel's line in the sand would mean for all of us.

debate said 53% think president obama will do better for them than mitt romney at 32%. how does he overcome that? >> i think wednesday night hit the restart button. they are ready to go. about a month to talk about his plan and i think what you saw on wednesday night, it wasn't the 30 second spots being defined by barack obama. it was mitt romney speaking unfiltered to voters for 90 seconds. he was in their living room. they liked what they heard. >> jamal, shoot tragt with me on this. if i'm a democrat, sitting around watching this, mitt romney connected wednesday night. it has got to make you little bit nervous to say this is a magic bullet that barack obama has. he has been able to connect with voters, mitt romney hasn't. now, he has. doesn't this make you a little edit twitchy? >> oh, it makes a lot of people twitchy. i wrote a column about this. democrats have been getting a little confidence, maybe smug, about their chances as poll numbers continue to show barack obama pulling away from mitt romney. knock on one more door, ring one more phone, to try to turn voters out, but u
